Background
From the Waikato Times 25/02/2006
A Morrinsville farm worker handed himself in to police before they had begun an investigation. Yesterday, David Bishop, 33, was sentenced to nine years in prison for a range of sexual offences against a girl aged under 12. Bishop appeared before Judge Phil Connell in Hamilton District Court and admitted two charges each of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, assault with intent to commit sexual violation, indecent assault, and one each of sexual violation by rape, doing an indecent act, sexual connection with a person aged under 16 years, assault on a child and possession of a firearm. A further charge of kidnapping was withdrawn. Defence lawyer Nitin Deobhakta said Bishop went to the police and confessed his crimes even before they began their investigation. Crown prosecutor Charles Bean said Bishop had groomed his victim for four years until she finally told someone at her school what was happening.
