Background
A sexual predator has been targeting Christchurch school children on the internet, as cyber-crime watchdogs warn that internet sex crimes are on the rise. Internet safety groups are calling for better policing of so-called “grooming” on the internet to better protect children and teenagers.
Invercargill man Dale Gregory Barnett, 44, is awaiting sentence after being convicted last week for trying to lure young children from Christchurch and Dunedin for commercial sex. A jury in the Invercargill District Court convicted him on two charges of making a commercial agreement for sex with minors, one charge of attempting to make an agreement and nine charges of supplying objectionable material.
Crown prosecutor Mike Mika said a Christchurch mother rang police after she was contacted by Barnett through a dating website. He was asking where he could find underage girls, Mika said. Police launched two operations in 2003 and 2004 to ensnare the predator after tip-offs from the public. The Christchurch operation, in early 2004, documented the man’s specific inquiries about what was on offer and how much it would cost.
An operation had also been launched in Dunedin after sex workers contacted police concerned about clients asking for children. Barnett phoned an undercover officer in Dunedin inquiring about a personal advertisement on the internet.
