Sentenced to 6 years 6 months in June 2001
Background
From the Nelson Mail 23rd June 2001
A man who sexually violated a seven-year-old girl has been sent to prison. Robert Glenn Barclay, 58, of no fixed abode, appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday and was sentenced to six and-a-half years in prison on a charge of sexual violation by rape and three and-a-half years on a charge of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection.
Barclay had earlier admitted the charges. The sentences are to be served concurrently. Judge Neville Jaine said the impact on the girl had been "incalculable". She now suffered from anxiety and insecurity, with broken sleep and nightmares.
Defence counsel Mark Dollimore said Barclay had been badly affected by the death of his wife in 1992 and had "lost the plot", becoming a very lost individual. He had become very transient and had hit the bottle in a fairly major way, he said. Barclay had committed no other offences of a sexual nature, and his previous offences were all drink-driving and traffic-related matters, Mr Dollimore said. Judge Jaine said he could understand the impact the death of Barclay's wife had had on him. He said Barclay had shown remorse for what he had done and its effects on the girl.
