Background
From this Dominion Post article
A plea for God to stop an assault finally halted an attack on a woman. The woman had 18 bruises, two cigarette burns and her fingers needed splints, Judge Bridget Mackintosh told Wellington District Court yesterday. Michael Lawrence Baird, 46, unemployed of Lower Hutt, was sentenced to nine years' jail on two charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and one charge of injuring with intent to injure. Judge Mackintosh ordered him to serve at least half the jail term.
A jury had found him guilty of the charges, which resulted from an incident at a bach near Upper Hutt on January 18 last year. Baird had known the woman for some time. Judge Mackintosh said the woman was repeatedly hit and Baird stopped only when she called out to God to make him stop. Baird tied her up and sexually assaulted her. The woman had been unable to work since the attack. Defence lawyer Des Deacon said Baird had showed great promise physically and mentally when he was younger, but illness and injury had held him back.
