Sentenced to just 12 months home detention in April 2010
Background
From Southland Times story 01/05/2010
A 33-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months' home detention when he appeared in the Invercargill District Court yesterday for sentence on charges relating to the sexual violation of two young girls. Jade Auckram, of Otatara, was 16 when he started the sexual violation, by unlawful sexual connection, of the 6-year-old and 7-year-old. The offending happened between January 1992 and December 1994.
Outlining the facts, Judge Kevin Phillips said the young girls would visit Auckram's home with their mothers, who were friends of his mother. During the visits they were allowed in the defendant's bedroom to play on his computer. It was as they sat on his knee that Auckram would commit the offences. Judge Phillips said the offending had had a devastating effect on the victims. As teenagers, both girls had abused alcohol and drugs and had relationship issues.
Crown prosecutor Mary-Jane Thomas took issue with a suggestion by Auckram's lawyer that the offending was a case of youthful experimentation. Auckram chose, for his own sexual gratification, to harm these girls – "this type of offending destroys lives", she said. Judge Phillips also ordered Auckram to pay $3000 emotional harm reparation to each of his victims.
