Background

A 43-year-old Hamilton man has been jailed for 6 years 6 months for "deviant" sexual abuse of a young girl. Ricky Anderson appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday for sentencing on four charges of sexual violation, indecent assault and doing an indecent act on a girl. The charges represent three years of abuse on the 10-year-old girl from 1995 to 1998.
Judge Robert Wolff refused to suppress Anderson's name after the victim's family asked for it to be made public. Sexual offenders are often granted name suppression to protect the identity of the victim. Judge Wolff also declined to outline details of the abuse in open court because of the sensitive content. "To go through the facts in detail would have a traumatising effect. It is not necessary to repeat them in detail." He would only allude to the nature of the offending. "There are elements of unusual deviant sexual behaviour, involving a young child for a lengthy period."
Anderson earlier admitted the charges. Crown prosecutor Craig Stevenson told the court how Anderson had found regular sexual gratification by indulging in acts the girl was reluctant to be part of. Mr Stevenson said Anderson had perceived the girl as a "willing participant", that she asked for the abuse and colluded with him over it. Judge Wolff said that attitude indicated Anderson's absence of acceptance of what he had done, or any responsibility for it. Judge Wolff said there had been significant breaches of trust by Anderson and the girl had potentially been affected permanently by the abuse.
