Signs of impaired driving.
Some impaired drivers do not show any sign of impairment until they must make fast, accurate decisions, but can't. However, watch out for drivers who:
- Straddle the centre lane or lane marker, or drive on the wrong side of the road or on the shoulder.
- Take extremely wide turns, or weave from one side of the road to the other.
- Almost strike an object or other vehicle.
- Drive at very slow speed, or brake erratically.
- Signal inconsistently with what they are doing.
- Stop inappropriately in places such as at green lights and crosswalks with no pedestrians.
- Follow other cars too closely.
- Drive without headlights.
- Don't wear a seat-belt.
What to do if you suspect a driver is impaired
- Stay as far away as possible from the suspected vehicle.
- Do not attempt to signal to the driver.
- Call the Police on *555 as quickly as is practical.
- If you get a chance, write down the vehicle’s registration and record as much detail as possible. For example, a description of the driver and vehicle, and the direction the vehicle is heading.
