If Kylie hadn't been brutally raped and murdered when she was 15 years old, she would have been approaching her 27th Birthday.

She may have also been a successful Vet, and who knows, a successful Horsewoman. None of that was to be. Paul Bailey now nears the end of his life sentence for eliminating, for no known reason, the life of our precious daughter, sister, relative and friend.

Twice we have appeared before the Parole Board, and twice we have succeeded in keeping Bailey in prison. This has not been without its toll on the health of family members. It is a very traumatic experience, appearing annually before a Parole Board, trying to convince them that a person of Bailey's calibre is not capable of or worthy of living outside of a prison.

It was with relief, that we learned that Bailey may not be eligible for parole for another 3 years. It is a little reassuring to feel that at last, we are beginning to be listened to, but how far are the politicians prepared to go? Is life truly going to mean life? We are serving a life sentence, why shouldn't Bailey?

The small changes that have taken place within the Justice System during the last 11 years fall short of what New Zealanders asked for in 1991, when one of the biggest petitions ever, was presented to Parliament. This Petition and subsequent lobbying was for a life sentence to mean life. Those in a position to make realistic changes, please do something! Listen to your people!
