In consultation with families involved in Homicide and also Senior Police in charge of these enquiries a conclusion was reached that a specialised " Homicide Support Network" should be established to assist families in need.
A preliminary meeting was held in Auckland on 10th July. It was proposed that a process be established to liase with New Zealand families of homicide victims, the N Z Police, Victim Support and the NSW Victims' of Homicide Support Group.
The NSW group has already been contacted with the view of helping establish an organisation in NZ.
The Sensible Sentencing Trust has a nationwide network of members, many of our members are murder victim families who through experience have an intricate knowledge of what is lacking and what would have helped them. They are prepared to help spearhead such an organisation. Our request to the government is for assistance to establish New Zealands Homicide support Network.
We are aware that Victim Support fills this role at present with a budget of $160.000 annually to counsel murder victims families. There appears to be huge gap between what is available and what would be of most benefit, both immediately and in the longer term. If we are caring civilised society then surely we should care more for those who have lost the most.
