1.1 I make this personal submission in relation to the Prisoners & Victims Claims Bill.
1.2 I request to be heard in support of this submission.
1.3 The address for correspondence in relation to this submission is as follows :
Darren Comrie
address not disclosed
to protect the victim
Lower Hutt
Details of offence and name of offender :
On May 2nd 1997 our Father, Ian Comrie was repeatedly and brutally stabbed to death without provocation by Michael Manihera during an armed robbery. Ian was a gentle and kind man who would help anyone in need and had many friends. Manihera showed no humanity towards Ian, nor did he consider the feelings of Ians’ co-workers, family or friends. This crime has left a huge gap and a lifetime of pain in the lives of many, many people. Our children have been stripped of a Grandfather as we have a Father.
Manihera has another chance.......Ian doesn’t. Whose human rights have been breached???
Compensation for this sort of person is a sickening prospect.
2.1 I support the proposed legislation in that the rights of Victims’ need to be strengthened.
2.2 I oppose any sort of Prisoner Compensation. Compensation should not be used as any sort of "remedy".
2.3 I look forward to expanding on the issue of Prisoners’ Compensation in my verbal submission before the select committee.
