The Sensible Sentencing Trust has accused what they term “Whacky lefties” of using desperate tactics and outright lies in an attempt to undermine the group's influence on law and order policies.
Trust Spokesman Garth McVicar said the attack by “The Standard” had alleged that SST was being funded by vested interest organizations that stand to benefit from the ‘tough-on-crime’ initiatives being promoted by SST and now being implemented by the National/ACT government.
McVicar said “The Standard” suggested it was time to ask where SST received its funding and if we had help from private companies who may benefit from policies such as private prisons or ‘Three-Strikes’.
“These disenchanted Labour supporters have accused SST of refusing to reveal where our funding comes from and that we have declined to register under the Charities Act because so doing would force some transparency over who’s paying the bills”.
“If these people represent current Labour Party thinking it is no wonder they are in opposition and I would suggest destined to stay there for a long time.”
“They even had the audacity to suggest that someone should ask who was paying my salary.”
“The Sensible Sentencing Trust is a registered charitable trust with IRD approved donee status, which means our books are audited and every dollar is accounted for.”
“The Sensible Sentencing Trust is funded by public donations and receives no government funding.
“I do not receive a salary, helping victims of violent crime and holding offenders accountable for the harm they cause is all the pay I need.”
“These whacky lefties need to accept that the public have had enough of their soft on crime policies and are prepared to back an organization that says what needs to be said and stands up to be counted.”
“The day of reckoning has come – they should just get used to that fact.”

Garth McVicar
