A Christchurch mother is alarmed and wants answers as to why her daughter’s rapist has been paroled within striking distance of local schools – and her daughter.
Leah Matena, Sensible Sentencing Trust Christchurch representative, says the woman approached her asking for help. "This mother and her family have been victimised by the rapist and now it seems, the system as well. When you think of a crime, you think of the one victim only. This is not the case as everyone within the larger family also becomes a victim as has happened here."
"After asking the parole board not to release this rapist to Christchurch, the city they live and work in, they are feeling re-victimised as not only is he here but he is within 3.5 km of their home and close to the workplace of a family member. He is also surrounded by at least five schools, all of which are now being advised."
The mother called for a meeting with the offender whom she has known as a family friend for 30 years. Gaining the courage to do so, she is told it will be 3-4 weeks away. Why does she have to again wait? Does it not suit the offender?
Again, she waits for answers.
Leah said she intended writing to the Chairman of the Parole Board. "We want answers for the sake of the victims, probation services and all agencies concerned. The Parole Board should put the victims and their families first, listen to them and house these monsters in another city far distant to reduce the chance they both shall one day meet, as the consequences of this will be?"
"And still another mother waits......"
