The Sensible Sentencing Trust has congratulated the Government on today’s announcements to benefit Victims of serious crime.
Trust Spokesman Garth McVicar said while nothing could restore or compensate a Victim for their suffering today’s announcement was a huge acknowledgement that they were not being ignored.
"At a time when New Zealand is facing hard financial times and everyone is being asked to tighten their belts this is extremely welcome by the Victims we represent".
"Every person I have spoken to this morning is very relieved and grateful that their voice is finally being heard".
"No amount of money can compensate for their suffering but knowing the Government is at least compassionate and aware of their plight is a significant relief to them and helps restore a semblance of balance and justice".
McVicar said that the Victims initiatives announced today were necessary to help restore faith and balance in a badly shaken and out-of-balance Criminal Justice sector.
"The past promotion of criminal friendly policies has seen the gradual evolution of a Criminal Justice Industry that has isolated and caused enormous anxiety to anyone unfortunate enough to be involved as a Victim".
"If public faith is to be restored it is essential that the system is brought back into balance and that will mean a lot more work around Victim issues".
"Today’s announcement is a significant step in the right direction".
Regards,
Garth McVicar
