ALEXANDER RESIGNS FROM TRUST

(7th December 2007)

The Sensible Sentencing Trust has accepted the resignation from its Crime Prevention Spokesman, Marc Alexander.

Mr. Alexander who was recently selected as the National Party candidate for the Wigram electorate offered his resignation to the Trust earlier today.

Spokesman Garth McVicar said that Sensible Sentencing Trust policy requires that the organization is not politically aligned. “It is critical that the Sensible Sentencing Trust remain apolitical, our first priority is to the victims of violent crime – to ensure they have an independent voice to bring a balance to what had become a very one-sided and criminal centred debate.”

“Yesterdays call by the Ombudsman for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the criminal justice system substantiates our claim that the system is at serious risk.”

“It is essential for the Justice System to be effective that it has the confidence of the public and the well being of law-abiding citizens in mind at all times. That is not the case at present.”

“I am sure that Marc will continue to ensure that any failures of the current system are exposed and that Victim Rights continue to be promoted at the highest possible level.”
