escalating violence in our community

(22nd January 2005)
The Sensible Sentencing Trust has launched a nationwide appeal to raise funds to enable a sizeable reward to be offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Hawkes Bay farmer Jack Nicholas.
Trust spokesman Garth McVicar said that Jack Nicholas was very popular in the wider community and an enthusiastic supporter of the Sensible Sentencing Trust.
"His advice on various issues over the years had been invaluable to us, Jack was a true Kiwi and prepared to give anyone a fair go but he was very concerned about the level and nature of violence in our communities today."
"Jack contributed an awful lot to his local community in many ways; we would like to offer New Zealanders the opportunity to give a little back to a man who gave so much to this country."
Mr McVicar said the Sensible Sentencing Trust was particularly urging Hawkes Bay farmers and the business community to contribute. "This area is doing very well financially and upholding the law is of crucial importance to the economic well being of Hawkes Bay, the last thing we need is a callous cold blooded killer on the loose."
"Somebody out there must know something that will assist the police; hopefully a sizable reward will tempt that person to come forward."
Donations can be made to the Sensible Sentencing Trust PO Box 701 Napier.
A $20 donation can be made by phoning 0900 SAFENZ (0900 723369)
