Coroner calls for “Dob in a Druggie”

Coroner Ian Smith has called for families of recidivist drug drivers to have the ability to report them to the authorities in order to get them off the road before they cause more accidents.

Christine Davey, Sensible Sentencing's Spokesperson on Drug Issues asks “why stop there?” It's not just on the roads that these people can be dangerous.”

She says that “given that using drugs like P is against the law, why do we have to wait until this person has hurt or killed someone before they can be dealt with and put into mandatory treatment?

The recent International Drug Symposium in Wellington called for the Drug User to be targeted as well as the Drug Supplier and Manufacturer – so let's get on with it, starting now.

Drug education to try and prevent uptake is the first step, but it can't be the last. All of that is quickly forgotten in the heat of a personal crisis and the offer of something to make them feel better. Non-intervention at this point can lead to disintegration of families, child abuse and more victims within the community – on the roads and within their own homes.

Parents ask Police to help stop their kids using P and Marijuana – and they're referred to Social Services, who say the Drug User has to “want” to stop before they can be helped.

And yet recent research from the National Committee for Addiction Treatment shows that coerced treatment is as effective as voluntary treatment.

We are told that the onus is on Communities and Families to deal with this issue – but to date we've been given no tools.

Give us a Community Police Force who cares about being the ambulance at the top of the cliff;

Give us Treatment facilities to commit these people to for Detox and Rehabilitation;

Give us the Right to live in our communities without fear of falling victim to the Drug User who, it seems, has more Rights than we do.

“Dob in a Druggie” must apply to ALL illicit Drug Users, not just the ones who have already caused road accidents. This is the only way to effectively deal with the “ticking time bombs” in our communities
