Background
Information from The New Zealand Paedophile and Sex Offender Index, New 2004 Edition
The victim had three days earlier given birth by caesarean section. She was sleeping alone in bed when Yeates, semi-naked and intent on rape, put a carving knife to her throat and threatened to kill her if she did not comply. The woman struggled and woke her partner, who was sleeping on the couch. Yeates attempted to stab the man but was himself wounded; he ran from the house but was tracked by police dogs. Justice Sir Graham Speight described Yeates as a predator and a danger to the community. "His welfare and interests are entirely eclipsed by the prospect that for an almost immeasurable time in the future he will remain a menace, especially to women in their own homes," the judge said. He said the parole board would have to think long and hard before it concluded Yeates would be released. Yeates had spent half of his 32 years in prison for a large number of offences.
