Grievous unprovoked assault on a New Plymouth man in February 2009

Sentenced to 4 years 8 months in August 2009
Background
From the Daily News 18 August 2009
Teenager Tane Anthony Vano carried on partying for hours on the streets of New Plymouth after repeatedly stabbing a stranger in the neck. As the 17-year-old celebrated, his 39-year-old victim lay unconscious in the grounds of St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, bleeding from multiple stab wounds.
Vano had been with a group of nine youths who had followed their drunk target some distance, from the Mill bar to the church, before he was grabbed, kicked and dragged into the darkness of the church grounds late on February 27. The reason for his beating? He allegedly grabbed the backside of a teenage girl who had asked him for a cigarette.
Four of the group of nine were charged for their involvement in the attack, two have permanent name suppression and are being dealt with in the Youth Court. Vano, along with Toroa Duke Troth, 19, appeared in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday where they were both jailed for their part in an attack that left the victim in hospital for a month.
Having already pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Vano was jailed for four years and eight months. Troth received a jail sentence of one year and eight months on charges of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft, a charge that was laid after he admitted stealing the shoes from the feet of the unconscious victim.
In sentencing, Judge David Ongley focussed most of his attention on Vano, who had told his friends he was "going to shank" their target before smashing a bottle and thrusting it into the wrist of the victim. Not content to end the attack there, he grabbed other bottles, throwing them at the head of the helpless man and ending the attack with two thrusts of another bottle into the victim's neck.
Judge Ongley told Vano any of the stab wounds could have led to the man's death, given their proximity to major arteries. "This was a case of vicious, random violence. An attack of that kind has to be considered as very serious violence. You showed no remorse and carried on partying."
Vano's counsel, Susan Hughes, QC, said her client acknowledged his role in the attack. In asking for a sentence of between 3 years 6 months and five years' jail, she described him as an articulate and intelligent young man who did not want to repeat a long stint in prison. Troth's counsel, Kylie Pascoe, said he had only been responsible for one kick to the victim's body.
