Background
In the Auckland High Court, Justice Mark Cooper said aggravating factors included the age of the two victims of Tupuola's offending (who were his cousins) and the breach of trust. He said Tupuola continued to deny his offending and has shown no remorse. The judge however gave Tupuola a three month discount for mitigating factors including his lack of previous convictions and his good family support. Prior to the rape one of the victims hoped to have a career in the NZ Navy and having navy training at the Devonport Base on the North Shore.
