Background
NZ Herald story December 1987 condensed here
A mentally unstable man who stabbed a schoolgirl in the chest as she pushed her bicycle through a Manurewa playground was sentenced to eight years imprisonment when he appeared in the High Court at Auckland yesterday. Mr Justice Thorp said William Matua Tuhoro had a history of violence and the community needed to be protected from him. But the court faced a problem of where to put Tuhoro.
Tuhoro, a 39-year-old unemployed Weymouth man, had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The court was told the 13-year-old victim was pushing her bicycle through the grounds of Clendon Park Primary School in the early evening of April 8 this year when, in an unprovoked attack, Tuhoro ran up to her and stabbed her in the chest.
Mr Justice Thorpe said Tuhoro clearly suffered from a mental and personality disorder. However the severity of his condition was in dispute. Five reports from experienced psychiatrists were prepared for the courts on Tuhoro but there were diverging options on how to deal with Tuhoro’s condition.
