Background
Christchurch Press story, November 2006 here
The victim of a Kaiapoi home invasion found himself grappling with convicted double murderer Walter Wairehu Te Huia. The Christchurch District Court was told yesterday that the householder, asleep in his home with his wife and daughter when Te Huia got in, drunk, was able to subdue him until police arrived. Te Huia was on life parole for two murders in 1988. After serving the life sentence he committed an aggravated robbery on parole, got another six years jail and, while on release for that, committed the latest crimes. Judge Michael Green said yesterday that since Te Huia had already been recalled as a life parolee, he was unlikely to see the outside of a prison again. "It may be you are totally unsuited for life in the community," the judge said. Te Huia admitted charges of assault, two of assaulting police, threatening to kill, two of burglary, and breaching parole.
The judge said that, on July 23, Te Huia smashed windows to get into a Kaiapoi meat company, causing $1600 damage but finding little to take. He climbed over the fence of a nearby house, entered through an unlocked door, then went upstairs where occupants were asleep. They awoke and Te Huia was confronted. He was subdued outside until police arrived. While on the way to the station he lashed out at officers in the police car and, on arrival, said he would "finish off" one constable and headbutted another. In a victim impact statement, the homeowner said he found the events unnerving, and now had to check upstairs rooms before his daughter went to bed. He could not help thinking what might have happened if Te Huia had not been drunk. Te Huia was jailed for 18 months, but the sentence is academic because of his status as a life parolee. His ultimate release, if any, is up to the Parole Board.
