Sentenced to five years in October 1997
Background
From Waikato Times story October 30th 1997
A movie showing American gang robberies inspired a Rotorua youth to rob a service station, throw petrol over the attendant and threaten to set him alight, Rotorua District Court has been told. Rewai Taylor, 17, who earlier pleaded guilty to a joint charge of aggravated wounding by dousing James Christieson with petrol at Rotorua on October 7, was jailed for five years when he appeared yesterday for sentencing before Judge Phillip Cooper.
Taylor also pleaded guilty on arraignment to a joint charge of armed robbery with a rifle of $160 on the same date. Crown prosecutor Jonathan Temm told the court that before the robbery, Taylor and another man watched a movie showing gangs committing robberies.
