Four out of five Mongrel Mob associates were last night found guilty over the slaying of a rival Black Power member in Gisborne last year. Anton Newcomb was stabbed to death outside Gisborne's Irish Rover bar on August 4. A High Court jury in Wellington found Juan Marcus Arron Sullivan, 20, guilty of murdering Mr Newcomb. Albert Tipu Atkins, 21, Ossie Paretene Aupouri, 25, and Poi Colin Taylor, 24 were found guilty of Mr Newcomb's manslaughter.

A fifth man Mark William Edmonds, 29, was found not guilty of manslaughter. The four guilty gang members were remanded in custody for sentencing in the High Court in Gisborne next month. The crown alleged all five were involved in the attack on Mr Newcomb who was stabbed seven times in the back by Sullivan. Sullivan admitted stabbing Mr Newcomb twice, but denied inflicting the fatal wound. Atkins, Aupouri and Taylor admitted being involved in a fight outside the bar but denied being present when Mr Newcomb was fatally stabbed.
