A man who pleaded guilty to a horrific attack which left a Porirua teenager with the mental age of a child, was jailed for five years when he appeared in Wellington District Court yesterday.
Manuel Angus Tawhai (19), unemployed, of Panmure, Auckland, had pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to Thomas Birch (17), with intent to injure him, during an attack with a fire extinguisher in Wellington last May.
Judge Patrick Keane said a victim impact statement from Thomas' mother - Thomas was now not able to speak clearly for himself - summed the attack up.
