Background
The Wellington High Court heard Tawa (who suffers from schizophrenia and a personality disorder) spent most of 10 years prior to being sentenced to preventive detention in custody or in hospital. When he does not take his medication and alcohol abuse is added he becomes psychotic to an extent where he lose touch with reality and have thought disorders and what are called "assaultative" tendencies. The psychiatric assessment is that a combination a of schizophrenic illness and underlying personality disorder have at least contributed to the offending.
