Background
The Auckland High Court heard Tautu, who was on parole, and a friend, for half an hour took turns to beat up a man before stealing a $6 packet of cigarettes. Tautu pushed a sawnoff shotgun into the man's mouth so hard that he smashed his dentures, and at one stage the man was made to drop his trousers and underpants. When two women in a car stopped and one got out to ask for directions, Tautu got into the car and forced the other to drive to a scheduled spot where he raped and sodomised her at gunpoint. Tautu had several previous convictions for sex offences and was described in court as "baby-faced time bomb" who posed a serious threat to women.
