Taniwha and the victim met each other at a strip club in Hamilton in the early hours of a Sunday morning. The victim was with a friend who invited Taniwha and his associate back to victim's house when the club closed at 4 AM. They had been drinking. At 8.30 AM the victim asked everyone to leave because she was tired. The others went back to the house of the victim's friend but Taniwha left quarter of an hour later and drove back to the victim's house and raped her.
