AUCKLAND -- A Rotorua youth has been jailed for 10 years for what was described as a vicious and prolonged rape by three men on a defenceless girl. Ian Tuua Tanga, 17, appeared in the High Court at Auckland yesterday for sentencing after he had earlier been found guilty by a Rotorua jury of raping the girl in April last year. Two others convicted of raping the girl were earlier jailed for 10 years after their sentences were increased by the Court of Appeal by two years.
The court heard yesterday that the trio held the 15-year-old down and raped her after she fell off her bicycle on the way to buy cigarettes for friends. She received such bad injuries to her genitals that she needed major surgery and was in hospital for five days. Crown prosecutor Jonathan Briscoe said the attack lasted nearly two hours and the three had no regard for the young woman. The only mitigating feature was that Tanga had helped the victim back to her friend's house after the attack.
Mr Briscoe said a doctor later said her injuries were consistent with her being punched or kicked. The victim had left school because of the trauma of the attack, and was depressed and still on medication. "Her life has been altered dramatically by something in which she played no role other than being a victim," he said.
