Sentenced to 5 years 6 months with a 3 year non-parole period in October 2009
Background
In the Hamilton District Court, Judge Spear set a starting point of 7 years but lifted it to 8 years 6 months in recognition of the kidnapping and assault with intent charges on his partner as well as the previous male assaults female conviction. He denounced the "cowardly and vicious attack" by Takiari on his partner. However the judge said Takiari was entitled to maximum discount for his early guilty pleas. Takiari was warned he faces the prospect of preventive detention if he commits further serious violent offences.
