Convicted murderer John Stewart has been sentenced to further jail time for four new offences. Stewart, 39, was convicted in 1986 of murdering his mother in Invercargill and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released on life parole on September 20, 1993. However, he was yesterday sentenced by Judge Kevin Phillips to two months' jail for driving while under the influence of alcohol, resisting police, refusing to allow a blood specimen to be taken, and intentionally damaging a fire water sprinkler, the property of the New Zealand police.
The offences occurred on June 13. Defence lawyer Kate McHugh said Stewart had already been recalled to prison on a final basis, but could go before the Parole Board in November. Judge Phillips also disqualified Stewart from driving for 10 months and ordered him to pay $742.50 reparation.
