Background
NZ Herald story here
Killer driver Lipine Sila has lodged an appeal against his conviction and sentence.
The appeal has angered the families of Hannah Rossiter and Jane Young, both 16, who died after being struck by Sila's car. Hannah's mother Sally Rossiter, said she was appalled by the appeal and would go overseas if it was upheld and another trial was ordered. "I will leave the country," she said.
Those involved in the tragedy were just beginning to move on and another trial would bring it all back. Ms Rossiter said the appeal made a nonsense of Sila's expressions of remorse and the suggestion he would go through a restorative justice process with the families. Jane's Harry Young, the father of Jane, said he had suffered sleepless nights since the police told him an appeal was likely on grounds he believed were erroneous.
