Sentenced to just five months in May 2007
Background
From the Rotorua Daily Post 11th May 2007
A TURANGI man has been jailed for an assault on a woman which a judge described as something out of Once Were Warriors. Jackie William Ripohau, 38, was sentenced in the Taupo District Court yesterday on a charge of assaulting a woman. He had admitted the charge but said the victim had stalked him. Defence lawyer
Louise Foley said he "completely overreacted". Police had stated Ripohau had followed the victim and punched her in the head, using both fists.
The woman's 8-month-old son was nearby. Judge Phillip Cooper said the victim was left with bruising and tenderness to her face. An aggravating factor was that the assault took place in front of her child. He referred to a well-known New Zealand book and movie about domestic violence in his sentencing. "This was really Once Were Warriors stuff. "You were getting stuck into her with both fists." Judge Cooper sentenced Ripohau to five months' jail and declined leave to apply for home detention. He also barred Ripohau from contacting the victim for 12 months.
