An Auckland man who stabbed two police officers with a screwdriver following a chase last year will spend at least three years and three months in prison.
Wayne Reuben, 34, was jailed for a total of eight years and nine months when he appeared in Auckland District Court today – 6 years 6 months for the incident where he stabbed the policemen and 3 years three months for unrelated burglary charges. Judge Josephine Bouchier imposed the sentences cumulatively and added a minimum non-parole period of three years three months, half the sentence of the violent offending.
Reuben had previously admitted 33 charges, including 17 related to the screwdriver incident on December 7 last year when he several times attempted to get away from pursuing police in the Panmure-Mt Wellington area. They included aggravated wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, three charges of aggravated assault, six charges of assault with a weapon and driving charges.
During the pursuit Reuben used a screwdriver to stab 19-year-old Constable Scott Burrowes in the chest, striking his sternum bone. Later he used the screwdriver to stab another older officer, Tumaru Anderson, in the leg. Members of the public helped police catch the offender as he approached several cars while trying to escape. The offences were committed while he was on bail for burglary charges.
An earlier charge of attempting to murder Mr Burrowes was subsequently withdrawn by police. Reuben had a history of burglary charges but few for violence prior to today. In a letter of apology to his victims Reuben expressed remorse for the distress he caused but said "I am not by nature a violent person". He said the incident followed a period of stress and happened the day his long-term relationship broke down.
Judge Bouchier said Reuben's offending "would have been some of the most serious following a police chase that I would have come across in my years sitting in this area" and that the level of seriousness warranted a minimum non-parole period. The burglary charges included three property break-ins at night while the house occupants were asleep.
