Background
Manawatu Standard, Friday, 29th February 2008
A man with 64 previous convictions was back in prison yesterday. Palmerston North District Court judge Michael Radford yesterday sentenced Joseph Rehutahi to 18 months prison on seven charges, including indecent assault, assault and resisting a police officer, wilful damage, and various bail breaches.
Judge Radford said all the other charges "paled into insignificance" compared with the one of indecent assault on an 8-year-old girl in 2006 in the city, which was premeditated and included a "despicable" threat to the girl not to tell. Ten of the last 20 years of Rehutahi's life had been spent behind bars. "You have no remorse and entrenched anti-social beliefs." Lawyer Jacinda Younger said Rehutahi said he couldn't remember committing the offence but had pleaded guilty to lessen the stress on the girl of going to trial. He'd once had a good relationship with her.
