The Nelson Mail. Nelson, December 16, 2009
A man serving a minimum 25 years in jail for serial rape has lost an appeal
over the taking of a blood sample from him more than eight years ago. Nicholas
Paul Alfred Reekie was 32 when he was sentenced in 2003 in the High Court at
Auckland to preventive detention with a 25-year non-parole period after being
convicted on 31 charges, including abduction and rape. The offences involved
four female victims, aged between 11 and 69. Another man, David Dougherty, was
wrongly jailed for the 1992 abduction and rape of the 11-year-old girl and
later cleared by DNA evidence. Reekie's latest foray into court was described
by the Court of Appeal as "extraordinarily trivial".
