Indefinite, as found insane
Background
Dominion Post story, Oct 29, 2005
A MAN found not guilty of murdering his wife has been committed for psychiatric treatment.
A jury found Chander Singh Rathod, of Waipukurau, was legally insane when he beat Suguna Chilamakuru with a baseball bat and strangled her in March last year.
Yesterday in the High Court at Wellington, Justice MacKenzie said Rathod was suffering from a paranoid delusional disorder and depression at the time of the "savage" attack. He had believed his wife was having an affair, though there was no rational basis for that.
A psychiatrist's report said Rathod's symptoms had improved since treatment. Justice MacKenzie said Rathod could not be freed till he was cured and ordered that he be detained as a special patient under the Mental Health Act. "The outcome has been tragic for all concerned, for your wife of course, who lost her life as a result of your attack, for your two young children . . . who have in effect lost both parents, and for you. From a position of respect in the community, you have now lost your wife, your children and your place in that community."
