Waikato Times story 13th August 2008
Waikato police are on the hunt for a violent offender with Eastern Bay connections.
Thirty-three year old Ernie Paul was originally wanted for breaching his parole conditions, and a warrant for his arrest has now been issued. Police say Paul has associates throughout the North Island, and his partner lives in Kawerau. Sergeant Karl Moon says the man has an extensive violent criminal history, along with close Mongrel Mob connections.
From a Dominion article 28/11/2001
TWO home invaders, who left an 86-year-old man tied up on the floor of his isolated Far North home, have been jailed for more than seven years. Ernie O'Neal Paul, 26, of Mangere, and Kelly James Johnstone, 23, of Onerahi, both unemployed, were sentenced in the High Court at Whangarei.
They had earlier admitted charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, kidnapping, aggravated assault and possession of an offensive weapon. Applying home invasion laws, Justice Salmon sentenced Paul to 9 years six months' jail on the aggravated robbery and kidnapping charges, and six years on the aggravated burglary charge. Johnstone received a 7 year six month sentence for the aggravated robbery and kidnapping, and six years for the aggravated burglary.
At 1.15am on May 19, the two men were stopped by a police patrol at Pakaraka, after driving up from Auckland the previous day. They asked police directions to a family funeral in Pawarenga. At 3am, the 86-year-old victim who lived alone in his farmhouse at Broadwood, 48 kilometres southeast of Kaitaia, awoke as his back door was smashed in. Standing in the doorway, Paul asked for directions to Pawarenga. He left and the victim returned to bed.
Ten minutes later, Paul and Johnstone entered the bedroom, one disguised with a tea towel over his head. Paul demanded money and was given $40 cash hidden in the bedroom. Johnstone was armed with a knife. He demanded the victim's car keys, while Paul searched the victim's room, asking for whisky and guns. Johnstone forced the man into the lounge at knifepoint. A television aerial cable was used to tie up the victim. The two men stole $3000 worth of property and rendered two phones useless before leaving the victim helpless on the floor.
