Confessed to raping an unknown girl in the Otara Reserve. Pauga said he had been walking to work when he noticed a girl on her way to school. On his return from work he noticed her again, grabbed and dragged her into the nearby bushes where he ripped her clothes off and raped her. He was described as a high recidivist, who because of his amiable personality could go unsuspected in the community. Justice Smellie said he was compelled to consider Pauga a danger to women and he would be failing his duty to protect the public if he did not sentence Pauga to preventive detention. Pauga who was sentenced by the Auckland High Court, lost an appeal against this sentence and conviction in April 1993
