From Christchurch Press story 30th May 2009
A 62-year-old man has been sentenced to nine months home detention for indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 12 in Christchurch more than 30 years ago.
A jury in February found Alan Ramsay Parkes, of Oamaru, guilty of four charges of indecent assault. Judge Gary MacAskill said aggravating factors were the abuse of trust, the fact the offending happened in places where the victim was entitled to feel safe, that the abuse occurred over five years, and that three of the assaults were at the top end of the scale.
However, otherwise Parkes had lived an exemplary life, had been married for 32 years and raised two children while doing voluntary work for his Jehovah's Witness church, he said. The judge gave Parkes credit for three months he had spent in prison and sentenced him to nine months home detention for the most serious charge and six months on the other three charges, to be served concurrently.
"This is a historical sex abuse case and when such offending comes before the court in respect to current offending then the outcome would be much more severe," the judge said in the Christchurch District Court yesterday. "But he is entitled to be punished by the standards of the time when he committed the offences." Parkes was also ordered to pay reparation of $5000 to a charity of the victim's choice.
