Background
From the Dominion 06/03/1999
A 19-year-old man sentenced to five years prison for the manslaughter of a Rangipo prison inmate lacked the guts to say no to taking part in the killing, a High Court judge said yesterday. Justice Morris sentenced Fakatau Tangata Pahulu in the High Court at Auckland for the manslaughter of Nga Tipuna Trego. Trego, 35, was doused in petrol and set alight in prison on August 25 last year and died 18 days later from burns to 75 percent of his body.
John Edward Tuivaga, 32, and Visi Taliau, 19, were sentenced to mandatory terms of life imprisonment last month for Trego's murder. During the trial the court heard of a feud between Trego and Tuivaga for the title of prison top dog. Justice Morris told Pahulu it was no excuse that he was forced to take part in the killing or face a beating.
