EVENING POST, June 7th 2002
An Upper Hutt man who kidnapped his former girlfriend, held her for three hours and threatened her has been jailed for seven years under home invasion laws.
Jason Darin Oran, 32, welder, had been found guilty of kidnapping Michelle Conn on July 24 last year. Wellington District Court judge Anne Gaskell said Oran and the victim had been in a relationship that had been on and off again. He had previously trespassed on her property. In July she had told him the relationship was over and it was not what Oran wanted to hear, the judge said.
She said Oran drove to Avalon and left his car nearby. He walked to the victim's home and hid in a shed, drinking until she returned home. He went into the house when the victim went to visit a neighbour. Judge Gaskell said Oran confronted the woman with a knife, held her about the neck and forced her on to a bed. The victim was petrified she was going to be raped and killed.
Finally, Oran calmed down and asked her to cuddle him. She could only do so once he had put the knife in a rubbish bin in another room. He followed her about the house for several hours, to the toilet and to make a hot drink. She managed to leave only when a friend arrived and talked him into letting them go to pick up children from school.
The judge said even then he extracted a promise that the victim would return. However, she went to the police, who found Oran still at the victim's home. Police found a hammer in a bag belonging to Oran at the house, as well as a telephone cord and medical tape. Judge Gaskell said the victim was terrorised by Oran. She had been unable to return to her home and finally even had to leave the area. She felt trapped and had feared for her life.
She had lost weight, needed tranquillisers to sleep and had flashbacks. She said Oran had simply been unable to cope emotionally with the breakup of the relationship. Defence counsel Mike Antunovic said it was out of character for Oran and really a crime of passion. People who knew him said he was infatuated with the victim. He said Oran's strong feelings had eclipsed his better judgment, as often happened in affairs of the heart.
