Background
From Christchurch Press story 9th December 1998
A South Auckland man who inflicted a "horrible saga of sexual abuse" on his teenage daughter was yesterday jailed for 13 years. Moata Onekawa, 42, was found guilty of six counts of rape, two of sexual violation, two of assault with intent to injure, and one of indecent assault after a High Court jury trial last month.
Passing sentence, Justice Giles said five of the rape charges were representative of ongoing rapes that had generally occurred several times a week between August 1990 and May 1994. The girl was first indecently assaulted shortly after she moved to Auckland and began living with her father. He continued to abuse her until she ran away from his care almost four years later. The abuse was carried out "in a context of violence, intimidation and controlling her," Justice Giles said. "In effect (you were) keeping her as your domestic and sexual slave."
