Background
From Waikato Times, May 24, 1996
A man serving a six-year jail sentence for sex crimes was jailed for another seven after being convicted on further charges dating back 25 years. At the High Court in Hamilton yesterday, Gordon Nicholson, 60, of Invercargill, listened with a hand cupped to his ear as he was sentenced on 16 charges ranging from one attempted rape to 12 indecent assaults on children. The charges related to six children, aged 5 to 15, between 1971 and 1978. Crown prosecutor Jo Price said Nicholson gained access to the boys and girls
through their families.
He met one of the six up to four times a week. Nicholson gave the children money and "showered one of the girls with expensive gifts". Grey-haired Nicholson listened attentively, attempting to interrupt Justice Tipping several times and nodding. Nicholson's laywer, Wayne Dollimore, said his client pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to avoid making the complainants appear in court. He had co-operated with the authorities from the start. Justice Tipping said Nicholson had not given the impression of remorse to the those assessing him prior to sentencing."You wormed your way into the affections of some of their families and then abused it horribly." Justice Tipping said 13 years all together was quite substantial. "You're a danger sexually to young people."
Note that a health report found there was a substantial risk of Nicholson sexually reoffending against children aged 5-13 that are known to him. One issue was Nicholson's refusal to acknowledge his offending, lack of remorse and lack of ability to control his sexual instincts .
