Background
Northern Advocate story here
This offender was given a first strike warning under the three strikes law for serious violent offenders. The law works as follows;
"Under the three-strikes policy, an offender will receive a standard sentence and warning for the first serious offence involving violence.
For the second offence, offenders will get a jail term (in most cases) with no parole and a further warning.
On conviction for their third serious violent offence, they will receive the maximum term in prison with no parole.
However, the court can decide not to order the maximum sentence without parole if it would be manifestly unjust to impose such an order."
