Background
From NZ Herald story
A Rotorua father has been jailed for nine months for a brutal attack on his 11-year-old son.
Steven McQuin Morrison, 32, unemployed, punched the boy after he came home drunk in the early hours of the morning, Rotorua District Court was told yesterday. Morrison went to his son's room and became angry when he found the family's dog on the boy's bed. Morrison pulled his son out of bed by his hair and punched him in the face with such force the boy was thrown back on to the bed.
The punch left a bruise on the boy's face that ran the full length of his cheek and could still be seen two weeks later. The attack took place in front of the boy's eight-year-old sister.
Judge Cecilie Rushton said the man had an "appalling" list of previous convictions, including four previous convictions for assaults on children, dishonesty offences, assaulting a woman and assaulting police. He also had previous convictions relating to alcohol.
