Background
From a Dominion Post article February 2001
"A Whangarei man has been jailed for 11 years for what a High Court judge called one of the worst cases of sexual violence she had seen. Tait Clarke Morgan, 32, was sentenced by Justice Potter in the High Court at Whangarie yesterday on two charges of rape, four
of assault with intent to commit sexual violation, and one of wounding with intent to cause grevous bodily harm. The charges related to one victim, over seven weeks between Febrauary 4 and March 26 last year.
On one occasion Morgan broke into the woman's home demanding sex. He punched, choked and held her down before removing her clothing and forcing himself upon her. In another instance the victim and Morgan were at a party when Morgan demanded sex. The woman refused and was knocked off a barstool and dragged around the garden by her hair. She fled into the house where Morgan kicked her in the head, sending her head through a glass pane in the kitchen door. Morgan also broke the woman's jaw after an argument about sex. He was sentenced to 11 years on the rape charges, six years on the assaults, and five years for the wounding, all to be served concurrently.
