Background
The Auckland High Court heard Moa came home to his flatmate and cousin Watene and they argued with each other. Watene verbally abused Moa. Watene went to her room and came out with an axe conveying that she was not in fact in the mood for any arguments with Moa and that he should not mess with her. Watene finally calmed down and went back to her bedroom, while she took the axe back to her bedroom Moa armed himself with two knives in anticipation of Watene returning with axe. Despite Watene returning to the living room unarmed Moa stabbed her repeatedly.
