Background
Christchrch Press story 28/11/2006
A man who poured boiling water over his partner and asked for sex and food is behind bars for at least three years. The Christchurch District Court was told the attack by Tuakana Mitaela-Pau left the victim with second-degree burns and disfigured for life. He was yesterday jailed for six years, with a minimum term of three years, by Judge Murray Abbott after admitting a charge of disfiguring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Mitaela-Pau, 39, also received concurrent jail terms on two charges of kidnapping and counts of assault with intent to injure, male assaults female, injuring with intent to injure, assaulting police, breaching community work, theft and illegally possessing a knife.
The judge said a series of violent incidents preceded the disfiguring incident. The first was in Nelson on May 20 when Mitaela-Pau punched the victim in the cheek when she refused to go home with him, fracturing several teeth. In a separate attack, she was kicked in the thigh. Between July 5 and 21, he stayed at her central Christchurch flat despite repeated requests to leave, in effect controlling her movements for two weeks. On July 24, after punching her in the head and squeezing her throat, he grabbed a jug of boiling water and poured it over her body. While she was apparently unconscious, he shoved her head through the kitchen wall three times. When she awoke on her bed, in "incredible acts of selfishness" he asked her for sex and to cook him a pizza. She was able to escape to neighbours. She spent 10 days in hospital, needing skin grafts and was left permanently disfigured, the judge said. Mitaela-Pau claimed the justice system had let him down in not offering rehabilitation for substance abuse. A minimum non-parole term was justified, the judge said.
