Jail for conning elderly woman out of $50,000
A 23-year-old Wellington woman who conned an elderly woman out of $50,000 was jailed today. Amanda McNamara was sentenced in Wellington District Court to three years and six months prison after pleading guilty to obtaining goods by deception, assault with intent to injure and breaching bail conditions. Crown prosecutor Claire Boshier said the theft of the $50,000 from an 84-year-old woman was premeditated.
Dominion Post story here
An octogenarian who tried to help a young drug addict by giving her money ended up in hospital with internal bleeding after she attacked him in his own home.
Amanda McNamara, 22, of Johnsonville, was yesterday jailed for 22 months for injuring with intent to injure and assault. Wellington District Court judge Bridget Mackintosh said McNamara once lived next to the 80-year- old man who had given her money in the past. ( We are advised that in fact it was her uncle who was the neighbour. He was not involved in the offending ) When she visited him in November she asked him for more money but he told her that he had no more to give. McNamara punched him several times in the arm, then dragged him out of his chair, kicking and punching him around the head and body.
Several days later she returned and began yelling and screaming at him. She punched him several more times before police arrived. Judge Mackintosh said the victim was hospitalised with internal bleeding in his kidneys and liver as a result of medication he was taking for his heart condition. He had gone into care after leaving hospital and no longer had any confidence.
The judge said McNamara had previous convictions but was very sorry about what had happened and knew what she had done was wrong. Judge Mackintosh said McNamara had a borderline intellect, was on methamphetamine at the time and had a reactive adjustment disorder after years of foster care.
Victim's family were under police protection due to threats made by offender
