Background
From the Dominion Post 27/03/2007
A Napier man who has a previous conviction relating to a full-scale bomb scare on an aeroplane has been jailed for trying to kidnap two 11-year-old girls. Paul Bob McGinty, 39, was sentenced in Napier District Court yesterday to nine months' jail for trying to entice two girls to get into his car. McGinty was picked up by police 40 minutes after he stopped his car and asked an 11-year-old girl sitting on a fence near a Greenmeadows playground to get in on July 8. He had initially driven off after the girl refused to obey his instructions but drove back later and again asked the girl, and a friend who joined her, to get into his car. Both declined and fled.
A jury took less than half an hour to find both charges proven at a trial last month. Yesterday, McGinty's lawyer, Bill Calver, described his client's actions as "simply of a lonely man wanting to speak to some children". Judge Tony Adeane gave McGinty leave to apply for home detention and said he must remain under supervision for six months after being let out of jail.In 2005, McGinty pleaded guilty to misusing a phone after making a call to the Inland Revenue Department which sparked a full-scale bomb alert on a plane.
